[-empyre-] Introducing the InterPARES 2 project and Dr Simon Pockley

We are also welcoming to this discussion the Canadian
InterPARES 2 (International Research on Permanent Authentic
Records in Electronic Systems) project, and metadata
standards expert Dr Simon Pockley from Deakin University.

InterPARES 2, http://www.interpares.org, is the second phase
of an international collaboration investigating the
authenticity of records created and/or maintained in digital
form. This month we are joined by Dr Luciana Duranti,
Professor in the School of Library, Archival and Information
Studies at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver
and the InterPARES 2 Project Director; Yvette Hackett, a
participant in the International Internet Preservation
Consortium, and the Chair of the InterPARES 2 Focus Group on
Artistic Activities; and Jim Suderman Coordinator Electronic
Records Program, Archives of Ontario who is a researcher in
InterPARES 2 Project.

Dr Simon Pockley's The Flight of Ducks - a still evolving
online documentary, was the world's first on-line Ph.D. He
was the collections manager for the Australian Centre for
the Moving Image http://www.acmi.net.au in Melbourne, and
is currently developing a digital repository for Deakin
University.

Welcome to -empyre- Luciana, Jim, Simon, and Yvette

---> Dr. Luciana Duranti's areas of interest have primarily
revolved around the testing of the validity of traditional
diplomatic and archival concepts, principles, and methods
for acquiring and maintaining control of contemporary
records. Thus, both her teaching and research are highly
theoretical and aim to develop a deep understanding of the
nature of archival material.

She has taught in the archival program at SLAIS since 1987.
Prior to moving to Canada to teach at UBC, she was a
Researcher-Professor in the Special School for Archivists
and Librarians at the University of Rome, Italy (1982-87);
served as State Archivist in the State Archives of Rome
(1978-82); and was Project Archivist for the Italian
National Research Council (1974-77). Professor Duranti holds
a Doctorate in Arts (1973) and graduate degrees in Archival
Science from the University of Rome (1975), and in
Archivistics, Paleography, and Diplomatics from the School
of Archivistics, Paleography and Diplomatics of the State
Archives of Rome (1979).

In addition to her university responsibilities, she has been
the President of the Society of American Archivists for the
year 1998-99, and is active nationally and internationally
in several other archival associations; she presents
numerous papers and workshops in several countries, and
publishes widely on archival history and theory, and on
diplomatics. In recognition of her contributions, she has
received the Canadian Universities Faculty Associations
(CUFA) of British Columbia's 1999 Academic of the Year
Award.

---> Yvette Hackett works at Library and Archives Canada, an
institution which was formally created on May 21, 2004.
Prior to that, she worked in one of LAC's antecedent
institutions - the National Archives of Canada - for almost
20 years where she worked first with moving image and sound
records. She has since worked with textual and non-textual
digital records in both the federal government and
private-sector areas of the institution.

In recent years, her work has increasingly focused on
international research into the acquisition and preservation
of digital records. Yvette was a member of the Authenticity
Task Force of the first InterPARES project. In InterPARES
2, she serves as the chair of the Focus Group on Artistic
Activities. In 2004, her work at LAC grew to include
participation in the International Internet Preservation
Consortium, which focuses on the long-term preservation of
web sites.

---> Dr Simon Pockley first became involved with digital
preservation in 1995 after losing 3 years work to a
corrupted hard drive. This led into what turned out to be
the world's first on-line Ph.D. embedded in a still evolving
online documentary, The Flight of Ducks
http://www.duckdigital.net/FOD/FOD0292.html. As well he was
involved with the development of the Dublin Core metadata
standard.

Simon was the collections manager for the Australian Centre
for the Moving Image http://www.acmi.net.au where he
attempted to apply what he'd learnt to complex forms of
digital artwork. He is currently developing a digital
repository for Deakin University.

---> Jim Suderman is the Coordinator of the Electronic
Records Program, Archives of Ontario has a graduate degree
in history and has worked in archives for almost 20 years.
Currently he is a researcher in the InterPARES 2 Project.
